Your Little One’s Hand and/or Foot Cast
Our 3D casts are handcrafted using high-quality plaster. They come mounted on a wood slice as standard, but upgrades to frames are available for an additional cost. This decision can be made on the day of the appointment, as we offer a wide selection of frames at varying prices.
How Does It Work?
We mix the casting liquid, and gently place your baby’s hand or foot into it. If your baby is a little wriggly, that’s perfectly fine, but we may need to apply slight pressure to ensure the hand or foot stays in place. This may cause mild redness around the area that was in the liquid, but this is completely normal and nothing to worry about—it will not harm your baby.
Once the mould is formed, we pour high-quality plaster into it. After a couple of hours, the cast is ready to be removed from the mould. The casting liquid is very safe for children, as it is primarily made from seaweed and is commonly used in dentistry for making teeth moulds. In the rare case of concern about potential allergies, we can arrange for a patch test, either at our location or by sending a sample kit with instructions for home testing. The patch test must be done precisely as directed for accurate results.
How Long Does It Take?
Each cast takes around 10 minutes to complete, including preparation and mixing time. The time your baby’s hand or foot is in the mould is about 3 minutes. Since the liquid begins to set after a couple of minutes, each cast must be done separately. If your baby is feeling fussy or irritable, don’t worry—that’s normal! However, it might make it difficult to get a perfect cast. In such cases, we’ll offer you a follow-up session at no extra cost to ensure the best possible cast.
Can I Order More Than One?
The initial mould is delicate and cannot be reused, as it gets damaged when removing the cast. However, once your plaster cast has dried completely, we can create a silicone mould (at an additional cost). This silicone mould can be used to make multiple copies and is durable enough for future use, including for cold casting. These moulds can be stored for future use and do not need to be used right away.
How Long Does It Take To Get Them?
It typically takes around 6-8 weeks to receive the final product. This timeframe ensures that the plaster cast is completely dry, which is crucial for preventing issues like mold growth. The drying process can vary depending on weather conditions, as excess moisture needs to be eliminated to ensure the highest quality and durability of the cast. By waiting this long, the product could last a lifetime.
